Die godin Serket. Sy word dikwels uitgebeeld met ’n skerpioen op haar kroon. Sy hou die anch, die simbool van die lewe, en ’n staf, wat mag voorstel, vas.

Serket (ook gespel Selket, Serqet ens.) was in die Egiptiese mitologie die godin van die heling van giftige byte en steke. Sy was oorspronklik die goddelike voorstelling van die skerpioen.[1]

Die steek van Noord-Afrika se giftige skerpioene kan tot verlamming en die dood lei, en Serket se naam het daarmee te doen. Dit kan óf "sy wat die keel laat toetrek" beteken óf "sy wat die keel laat asemhaal". Eersgenoemde naam dui op haar vermoë om die onregverdiges te steek, en laasgenoemde op haar vermoë om die simptome van giftige byte en steke te heel.


In kuns is sy aanvanklik uitgebeeld as ’n skerpioen en later as ’n vrou met ’n skerpioen op haar kop. Hoewel dit nie lyk of sy enige tempels gehad het nie, was daar verskeie priesteresse vir haar in verskeie gemeenskappe.


Omdat die skerpioen van Noord-Afrika se steek iemand kan doodmaak, was Serket ’n belangrike godin en farao's het haar dikwels as hul beskermgodin beskou. Haar noue verbintenis met die vroeë konings wys sy was veral hul beskermer. Daar word ook soms gesê sy het die gode beskerm teen Apep, die groot slang-demoon van die bose.
