For rivers it should flood from time to time, the river bank change from season to season, maybe in winter it got frozen that an army could pass. There should be mountains, plateaus, valley passes, etc. Setup a base in a geographically defensive place, conquer remote enemies.
Turn based or realtime should be both be OK. Thanks
