Википедија је мултилингвистичка енциклопедија отвореног садржаја на интернету подржана од стране Задужбине Викимедије, а заснована на моделу уређивања слободног садржаја. Назив „Википедија” је сложеница ријечи вики (технологија за прављење колаборативних сајтова, настало од хавајске ријечи „wiki” што значи брзо) и енциклопедија. Википедијини чланци пружају везе дизајниране да воде корисника до повезаних страница са додатним информацијама.


Википедију заједнички пише углавном велики број анонимних волонтера без икакве надокнаде. Свако са приступом интернету може писати и правити измјене на Википедијиним чланцима; осим у посебним случајевима када је уређивање ограничено како би се спријечило ометање или вандализми. Корисник може доприносити анонимно, под псеудонимом, или, ако тако жели, путем свог стварног идентитета.


Основни принципи по којима функционише Википедија су пет стубова. Википедијина заједница је развила многе политике и правила ради побољшања енциклопедије; међутим, упознавање са њима није формални услов прије почетка уређивања.


Од настанка 2001. године, Википедија је брзо изразла у једног од водећих референтних сајтова, привлачући преко 374 милиона посјетилаца у јуну 2015. године. Нешто мање од 70 хиљада активних корисника уређује преко 37,2 милиона чланака на 291 језику.[1][2] Тренутно постоји 619.480 чланака на српском језику.


Људи свих узраста, култура и поријекла могу додати или измјенити садржај, референце, слике или неке друге медију у чланку. Садржај доприноса је важнији од стручности или квалификација корисника. Шта ће у чланку остати зависи од тога да ли је садржај без ауторског ограничења и спорног материјала о живим људима, и да ли се уклапа у Википедијину политику, давајући предност провјерљивим изворима у односу на објављене изворе, изостављајући уредниково мишљење, вјеровање или оригинално истраживање.
