Cāirus[1] (-i, f.)[5] sive Cāhĕre[6] (Arabice القاهرة, al-Qāhira 'Victrix', 'Domitrix'), est caput Aegypti et maxima urbs in mundo Arabico et in Africa, atque regio sexta decima a maxima in orbe terrarum.

Cum Arabes Aegyptum anno 641 Byzantinorum devincerent, castra Arabis ducis Amr ibn al-As hic posta erant, quae facta sunt urbs Fossatum nomine (Arabice الفسطاط‎ al-Fusṭāṭ).
