By gatekeeping, what I'm referring to is when people argue/fight for keeping a game exclusive to one platform, and are against it being released on other platforms.
This is a phenomenon I've seen countless times, especially in online communities. A game comes out exclusive to a console, and sells well. Some time later, the game is announced for other platforms. A certain subset of owners of the original platform will be upset at this decision.
A few questions:
I mainly see this from console gamers, especially with console-to-PC ports. I've never seen PC gamers being upset that a PC exclusive is being ported to console. Why?
What benefit is there to the consumer for keeping a third-party game locked to one platform? Is it solely bragging rights?
Are there any detriments to the developer if they wanted to release their game to other platforms later rather than sooner?
I don't see this behavior when it pertains to games that were announced as multi-platform from the start. I've only seen this behavior with games that started out on a specific platform(s) first, but then branched out to others, such as Yakuza, Octopath Traveler, and Grand Theft Auto V. GTAV is what prompted me to write this question, since there was an actual petition to prevent the game from releasing on PC, which got over 13,000 supporters, to my surprise.
