  • Announcement

  • Updated 1 year ago

  • (Edited)

//

Last.fm takes the privacy of its users very seriously and towards the end of the month we will be introducing improvements to how we handle your personal information. More details about this will be posted nearer the time.

One change is that we are going to have to remove all legacy pages of the old Last.fm as these pages are read-only snapshots (like cached pages on Google or the Wayback Machine) and are no longer wired to the main user database.

While we had always planned to decommission these pages eventually, we had hoped to keep them online until a suitable replacement had been built. Unfortunately, that is no longer possible, with some exceptions outlined below:

Journals
Past journal entries will be ported over to the new site, with bbcode formatting. However, shoutbox comments cannot be preserved.

The Last.fm public API documentation
We are planning to upgrade the API soon, however in the meantime the existing API documentation will be preserved for reference along with the ability to register API keys.

Groups, Forums, and Playlists
Unfortunately, the old Last.fm groups, forums, and user playlists will no longer be accessible. We are unable to bring these features back to the website at this time.

Miscellaneous pages:
Label pages, venue pages, and build will no longer be accessible.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.

Friendly reminder for anyone, where we can still get our playlists (I'll save screenshots, at least)

And question for team is: by "However, shoutbox comments cannot be preserved" you mean journal shoutboxes or general ones for artists? I guess it's for journals, as I even remember such thing, but just want to be sure. Whole message is kinda sad, honestly saying.

You can use the link to your old playlists to copy&paste them e.g. to a spreadsheet app which enables you to clean them from unnecessary data afterwards and save them as a CSV file. As they are hosted on a slow backup system, the link might not work immediately, then try to fill in your username manually in the URL:

https://www.last.fm/user/_/library/playlists

Someone also created a JavaScript bookmarklet for copying your playlists to a CSV file, maybe it still works.

Only the comments on journals are affected, not the normal ones on artist or user profiles. But the journals themselves will be ported over to the new site with BBCode.

Does it mean that the forums and groups will disappear completely from the website or will they remain in this read only version?

"Unfortunately, the old Last.fm groups, forums, and user playlists will no longer be accessible" i think you won't be able to see them anymore. they've been in read only version until now, and now they are removing them completely.

I'm sorry for people that were hoping for playlists, groups and forums coming back . although there were no key features for me, I don't find a great move to wait all these years before declaring they were not in your plans...
but label pages and *venue pages*... really? why don't you remove the whole events section, if you don't bring back a fundamental part of the events' search and archiving. I'm really disappointed.

I really can't see the sense of it all: you improved considerably the events' creation system, now way better than before. also, the geographical search works better now.
but it still seems you *don't want* people attending gigs on your site.

1 - seeing which events a single venue hosted in the past and will host in the future helps people to join more events.
2 - correcting/updating venues' wrong details (address etc) helps people to join more events.
3 - seeing which events your friends are attending (in a sub-section as it was before) helps people to join more events too.

you apparently don't care of these things, and it seems we have to renounce to 1) and 2) forever. :(

My distaste for the new lastfm started way back when it was still a beta and while I still had the option to switch back to the legacy site. I remember a majority of the users voted against the beta makeover as it was all cosmetic and lacked a lot of the old charm. Seems like they'll be losing a major chunk of disheartened legacy users more now than ever. I'm glad I was around during the good ol times. Last.fm would never be the same till they stop killing all the good stuff thinking they are 'improving' s**t. You ain't!

anyway, is also the artwork uploading over? or the uploading at all? I just tried to upload a missing record cover and there's no more the option. I notice there's no upload option for the artists' pics too. temporary bug? (and in that case, for *how much* time approx.?)

So the "new" last.fm is in fact the old last.fm without the good features.

All in all this looks like just a clean-up of dead data, I guess to avoid conflicts because of the General Data Protection Regulation (Implementation date: 25th of May). It's not said that these features will never come back in any way. A personal backup of playlists would have been nice for those who had such.

If this has something to do with General Data Protection Regulation then will you finally let all those users who deactivated their accounts to actually get the option to delete their accounts forever? There are ex users who do not want their e-mails to be affiliated with the Last.fm site anymore.

@Music Person
An artist page isn't a personal page.
However, email addresses would have to be removed from the site on request as far as I know.

So just to be clear, groups aren't coming back in the near future or they aren't coming back at all? Are you still working on groups, because I thought that was the whole point of the new shoutboxes?

Well, you know, we should read all by its strict lines and "We are working on reintroducing ways to connect with other music fans around the world in the near future." doesn't say anything about groups coming back in the near future, that can mean anything :P

Booo! Just, booo. I wish I had a heads up so I could have made a screenshot or archived a couple things. It's like Lame.fm is intentionally trying to weed out its users. I just found my way back after a few years when they got rid of groups. And alas, somehow there are less features than before.

Have you tried using the Wayback Machine for your profile? I've mentioned this to a couple of other members, and I've had some success in retrieving some older screenshots of my profile. Although I haven't tried journals or groups, I hope it's worth a shot!

I find this stupid! The administration said they would return all old functions to its place after they finish BETA. Where this all leads if we will not be, able to use our old Groups for which it took years of effort to build? I don’t understand here anything. What is the point of being here if we will never be able to communicate with one another on the way like we used to?

I will no longer visit my profile because I don’t see a point of hanging on my profile 24/7 when the Groups will never return. Can somebody explain to me what is going on here? Will the Groups, Journals, “About Me,” recent friends activity, recent listeners list, top listeners for albums and playlists return or not? If Spotify can have a personal forum, and recent friends activity then I don’t see a reason why Last.FM is not able to bring it back.

I only use last.fm to keep a record of my scrobbles - It has come in handy being able to look back at my profile and rediscover songs from years back that I used to put on repeat xD

I also have a "legacy" account that I lost my password for but I was able to rediscover some old music I used to listen to, and I was shocked to see how much interaction happened with my old profile, because ever since signing up again with this new profile, I've only had one random person contact me because we shared the same music taste - that used to happen all the time, connecting with people who shared the same music. I miss that.

Well, it's lasted this long.  Can you believe it's been almost, if not, 15 years?! I'm old!! Last.fm is a legacy in itself, there really is nothing else like it even to this day.

It used to be the Facebook of music lovers, but way better than Facebook.

Now? It's not even a shell of its former self.. however, last.fm is an amazing music database and if anything it is a way for users to track and journal their music habits.  As someone who listens to music 24/7 and takes it too seriously, last.fm has been a blessing to me.  I hate when I've realised I haven't scrobbled for 2 weeks because my scrobbling method was acting up.  I love the charts, but mostly love the music history.

I would love a way to self-host last.fm, but imagine the size of database you'd eventually need? Imagine the hosting costs for last.fm lol
-- Is it possible to Scrobble to your own self-hosted server? I'd be interested in fooling around with that if there is a source.. I doubt it but let me know anyone who reads this and knows >>>_>> (Not directed at you OP)

If it came to it, I'd wish for last.fm to depreciate everything except for Scrobbling..  Really, with all the other methods of socialization, to me last.fm is a way to store my listening history and share it with the social media sites
 that I use to socialize.

No one seems to notice how they started the post:
Last.fm takes the privacy of its users very seriously

In my opinion this is what they mean - the new GDPR laws force them to take the necessary measures to anonymize their internal databases unless there's a good reason for accessing that information and they don't want to spend time on doing this on legacy (read only) databases.

I don't usually agree with Last.fm's latest decision, but this time I think it's a proper decision. From my understanding they are not saying these features will never come back, but they can't come back at this moment and because of GDPR there's no alternative than to remove them.

I am unhappy that the forums and groups are now gone. I understand the privacy liabilities they represent under GDPR without a proper management system. Doesn't make me any happier but c'est ma vie.

With the forums outsourced to GS,does Last.FM have a compliant system now?

you have not mentioned about copyright infringements of user7s posts. and by reading all of its entry there is even never included specific due date which the closure takes place. so all of a sudden being forced to watch only the newly transported version of the journal entries with no comments feature is not really effective to my sense. even there was no further notice concerning the change beforehand by email to every user. i do not think that change is effective, and you should take copyright infringements more seriously as much as of users7 privacy. i do not accept the change outlined here. i am possessing the right to retrieve all of my contents i posted in the past, and to regain the right to delete all of my shouts, or entries i made in the past to lessen the data i no longer need or want here. i wrongfully used this website as a blogging tool with full trust that all of my contents i posted here responsibly are to remain intact in the way i posted exactly, to make it as drive to restore stuff. so upon this misconception i was having, after being forced to realize all of these expectations are possibly wrong, i have already decided to remove all of these materials i posted in the past upon saving. please give me the right to access to the original contents intact in the way i posted exactly in the past, and if changed were made temporarily without my permission by someone different, i think i reserve the right to know the specific names or usernames of people who did it only as a means to mob me.

were you a subscriber, as you are suggesting now that you were able to copy all of your old journal posts during 2015, or was that presented with a premise that when the update was promoted elsewhere on every user7s page, what kind of features will affect any changes, or not, which could make you prompt to make that decision

only supporting my claim that as you used the word, during, i thought while the change was taking place, i thought you were doing that, as that procedure cannot be done instantly. i think that kind of a point of view can come from english language, having the term progressive.

as you see, even this site is giving its users the right to decide whether to edit, or remove the post they made on their discretion, i guess at least we need to be provided specific reasons on why that ought to be taken place, even when we are not subscribers.

asking out users to be subscribers, especially if it thinks that running of specific pages rather cost, or something more openly, like wikipedia or guardian does is also an option to me, without making that decision without providing any specific reasons behind them.

shoutbox comments cannot be preserved.

what is the reason behind the decision, even when the legacy site was active, it was even taking more additional time loading these contents with blank parts what i posted some copyrighted images of others from elsewhere online which needed to be suggested thus like deleted posts of tumblr do to make users sure that there never were posts which any given users posted even was helpful to stop having worries from them, too
