Does anyone know what the 5 pins that interface with the main NES mobo from the power modulator do? I know the middle one is 5v. Then two on one side of that are Audio and Video. But what are the two remaining? They’re labeled ps1 and ps2.
My problem is somewhere in my modulator is busted and it no longer sends 12v to the voltage regulator, and therefore doesn’t emit 5v out to the mobo. I already did a complete cap replacement, as I saw one did blow. But that’s fixed now, and still no 5v. Also tested the four diodes there...all good.
I did test both of those NPN transistors I saw in the power modulator, labeled on them as CS1740. When I put my black probe to middle pin and red probe to first pin I get 0, but then moving red probe to pin 3, I get 0.667V. I think that means bad, so I ordered a couple new ones.
While I wait for those I thought I’d just pull 12v from the ps2 pin and send it to a dry trace that needed it in order to feed the voltage regulator. That seemed to work: the voltage regulator now gets fed and outputs 5V....EXCEPT now as soon as I plug in the power brick (from wall outlet) to the modulator, the power button LED starts blinking....I haven’t even pressed it to the “on” position on the console, so this is really boggling.
If one is modding their NES, like say with Tim Worthington's NESRGB mod, then doesn’t all the NES mobo really need from the power modulator is just the 5V? (Not counting the 12V that gets sent to Tim’s voltage regulator, then onto his board). Unless those ps1 and ps2 pins do something really important?....I have no idea.
